An interview with ELLES director Malgoska Szumowska

May 2, 2012

Following a fantastic opening and audience Q&A last weekend, Malgoska Szumowska sat down with us to further discuss her new film ELLES. A provocative exploration of female sexuality that wowed audiences at the Berlin Film Festival, ELLES stars the fearless Juliette Binoche as Anne, a well-off Parisian journalist investigating the lives of two student prostitutes for a magazine article. What begins as a routine assignment quickly turns personal, as Anne is drawn into the lives of these fiercely independent young women and forced to confront her marriage, her competence as a mother, and her own physical needs and desires.

Q: What was your inspiration? What drew you to this story?
A:  The idea came from my producer Marianne Slot. She found an article in French Elles about student prostitution. She wanted to find a woman director from Eastern Europe. Someone who has an outside view of French society. She expected something about social problems, but I was thinking before about making a film about womenâ??s sexuality. I didnâ??t want to make a social film about student prostitution. I didnâ??t know how, and suddenly she came and proposed it in a good sense.

Q:  The three leads are captivating, but so different and they each give very powerful, intimate performances. What was the casting process like?
A:  I donâ??t do typical casting, and in this case, I didnâ??t either. Usually I have someone in my mind in my writing process. I knew I had to make a film in France, and my characters are going to be two girls. We knew this from the beginning. Immediately, I figured out it should be Juliette Binoche. I loved her performance in Michael Hanekeâ??s Cache. But Marian initially said Julietteâ??s too big a star, and it might be hard. After that, when I was writing it, I was thinking of Juliette. Joanna Kulig I saw in a Polish film. I was writing for somebody like her. It was a funny story, that Joanna kind of lied to me that she spoke French. Then when she figured out that she doesnâ??t speak French, the producer was unconvinced, but then we forced Joanna to learn French in front of the producer, and she did it very well. Anaïs Demoustier I saw in a film Sois Sage, I liked her performance. I kept her for my first idea. The typical casting just doesnâ??t happen for me.

Q:  What was the hardest part of making this film? The easiest?
A:  The hardest part was to work outside of my own country. To do it not in my language, in French, and to be far away from home for almost one year. I moved with my family. It was hard to find myself in a different culture. The French crew was like a family at some point. They helped me and supported me. I was so afraid in the pre-production, but then while shooting we became a family. It was easy to make it through because of them. It was easy because of Juliette Binoche. She said a pretty fast â??yes.â? She worked with me on my rules, and I worked with her on her rules. We were like sisters.

Q: What have audience reactions been like?
A: The audience reaction has been divided. This was something I expected from the beginning. Iâ??m happy with this. It was the kind of the plan. The people either hate the film, or love the film. There are not many reactions in between. I can see the women really like the film at the audience Q&As. Women probably like the film more than the men.

Q:  Would you consider this a feminist film?
A:  Before shooting, I never thought about if it would feminist or not. My attitude was probably they wouldnâ??t like it. I was surprised that some feminists in Poland like the film. Liberation Newspaper in Paris said itâ??s a beautiful manifest of modern feminism. I was really surprised in a good sense.

ELLES is now playing at the Angelika New York.  For more information about the film, visit www.elles-movie.com or www.facebook.com/ellesmovie

Whit Stillman discusses DAMSELS IN DISTRESS

April 20, 2012

Whit Stillman sat down with us earlier this week to discuss his witty new film DAMSELS IN DISTRESS, the filmmaker’s first in nearly 15 years. Check out the video below for insight into his writing process, casting the outstanding young actors in the film, and creating his very own international dance craze (via the main character Violet, that is).

p.s. that soundtrack he mentions? You can win it!

ABOUT DAMSELS IN DISTRESS:
Premiering at the Toronto and Venice Film Festivals, director Whit Stillmanâ??s sharpâ??edged comedy is his first film in 13 years. Like his earlier hits METROPOLITAN, BARCELONA, and THE LAST DAYS OF DISCO, the film focuses on privileged young adults bonded by their sense of entitlement. Greta Gerwig is hilarious as a painfully earnest student who helps run the campus Suicide Prevention Center, helping severely depressed students with a program of good hygiene and musical dance numbers at a bleak East Coast university.

DAMSELS IN DISTRESS is Now Playing at the Angelikas Dallas and Plano, and opens 5/4 at the Angelika in Hawaii.

Behind the Scenes of THE RAID, parts 4 and 5

April 5, 2012

THE RAID has become a box office sensation both in U.S. theaters and in its native Indonesia – where it’s expected to be the first film since 2009 to break 1 million admissions and go on to become one of the top grossing Indonesian films of all time.

Below are a couple more video blogs from the production of this high-octane action flick. We’re not saying this is the perfect Easter Weekend movie, but if you haven’t seen it yet you should definitely check it out while it’s still in theaters.

The filmmakers discuss the challenges of shooting on location, producer Ario Sagantoro discusses the black humor in the film, and actor Ray Sahetapi discussses plainting the villainous Tama:

The filmmakers go into greater depth about the fight choreography and the stamina required to make the fight scenes as intense as they appear:

Behind the Scenes of THE RAID, part 3

March 29, 2012

Since its Midnight Madness premiere at the 2011 Toronto Film Festival, Gareth Evansâ?? new Indonesian action thriller has blown audiences away with its smart storytelling and relentless action. Evans, renowned for 2009â??s MERANTAU, turns intense fight scenes into elaborate production numbers staged in cramped quarters. The plot involves a SWAT team targeting a drug lord on the top floor of a 15â??story tenement, but each floor brings a new challenge. When bullets run out, knives, batons, machetes, and even a light bulb enters the fray. Finally, nothingâ??s left but bare knuckles in handâ??toâ??hand combat.

The filmmakers have bestowed some fantastic video blogs on the internet. Here, they take us through the on-location SWAT team action in the film:

Check out THE RAID this Friday 3/30 at the Angelikas Dallas, Plano, and Hawaii!

Mad Men returns + S5 ep.1 available online!

In case you missed the biggest TV event this side of 2012, AMC’s Mad Men returned to the air last week after a long hiatus. This of course means the return of our weekly watch parties at the Angelikas Dallas and Plano – if you haven’t attended in the past, let this be your season! We promise it’s worth getting off the couch and putting on pants.

Both locations broadcast it live in HD on their biggest screens, and there’s nothing like watching Pete Campbell throw a hissyfit with friends and like-minded television fiends by your side. Angelika Plano has champagne available in the cafe, Dallas is mixing up classic cocktails from their in-theater cash bar, and era-appropriate dress is encouraged.

Angelika Dallas has also teamed up with the Vintagemobile, a mobile vintage clothing store that roves the streets of Dallas offering curated vintage clothing from a cool green schoolbus. The bus won’t be parked at Mockingbird Station during the watch parties, but they will be giving away gift cards to the shop during commercial breaks (brush up on your 60’s trivia!)

Missed the 2 hour season premiere last weekend? Watch it free on AMC’s website – and we’ll see you at the theater this Sunday @ 9pm CST!

An interview with RETURN writer/director Liza Johnson

February 10, 2012

Didn’t pre-purchase a ticket for tonights sold out screening of RETURN, with director Liza Johnson and actor Michael Shannon in attendance for a Q&A,? You’re in luck! The first time feature writer/director stopped by the Village East earlier to chat with us, touching on the real-life stories of military vets that inspired the film, as well as her experience working with the incredible pool of local talent in NYC (including John Slattery, Paul Sparks (“Boardwalk Empire”), Talia Balsam, and Louisa Krause (MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE)). Check it out below, and be sure to catch RETURN this weekend at the Village East Cinema!

ABOUT RETURN:
Liza Johnson makes her feature debut in this riveting drama, which drew bouquets of praise at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. Linda Cardellini (TV series â??Freaks and Geeksâ?) gives a brilliant, critically acclaimed performance as a soldier returning to Ohio from the Middle East to discover that her husband, friends and hometown have greatly changed. Michael Shannon (BOARDWALK EMPIRE, TAKE SHELTER) is the not-always-helpful husband, while friends John Slattery and Talia Balsam (Mr. and Mrs. Sterling on MAD MEN) offer more substantial support.

Opening Fri 1/20

January 20, 2012
MISS BALA

Mexico’s official entry to the Academy Awards, which unfortunately didn’t make the Foreign category shortlist this week. Still, it’s impressed a lot of people at Cannes, Toronto, and NYFF, and Manohla Dargis at the NY Times calls it “a first-rate art-house thriller.” Opens today at the Angelika New York.

CORIOLANUS

Ralph Fiennes directorial debut, which Variety said “could easily pass for the work of an accomplished master,” updates Shakespeare’s play about a prideful, tormented tyrant and features a script which retains most of the Bard’s language and syntax. Opens today at the Angelika New York.

HAYWIRE

King-of-cool director Steven Soderbergh’s fresh take on the spy/revenge thriller. Chris Vognar at the Dallas Morning News gave it a B+, and everyone is loving real-life MMA fighter (and Dallas native!) Gina Carano in the lead role. Opens today at the Angelika Dallas.

  THE ARTIST

Fresh from it’s Golden Globe Best Picture (comedy/musical) win, THE ARTIST expands to the Village East this weekend. Also playing at the Angelikas New York, Dallas and Plano, and the Angelika in Hawaii at Kahala 8.

MY WEEK WITH MARILYN

Reopens at the Angelika Plano and moves over to the Village East this weekend in honor of Michelle Williams’ Golden Globe win. Of Williams’ stunning performance, Rogert Ebert said: “She evokes so many Marilyns, public and private, real and make-believe. We didn’t know Monroe, but we believe she must have been something like this.”

Ezra Miller’s “masterclass” working with Tilda Swinton, in WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN

January 18, 2012

After an initial Academy-qualifying run back in December, WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN returned to the Angelika New York this weekend to a great audience reception and stellar box office. We were lucky enough to have Ezra Miller, who plays Kevin in the film, stop by to chat about his preparation for this intense role and the lessons he’s learned from working with seasoned actors Andy Garcia (in CITY ISLAND), Liev Schreiber ( in EVERY DAY), and Tilda Swinton, who stars alongside Ezra in this film as Kevin’s uncomprehending mother. For aspiring actors and fans of the craft, this interview is a must-see!

ABOUT WEE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN:
Oscar winner Tilda Swinton (MICHAEL CLAYTON) could earn another trophy for her searing portrait of a heedless, career-minded mother coping with her son’s killing spree in suspenseful and gripping psychological thriller WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN. KEVIN is Scottish director Lynne Ramsey’s first film in nine years, and she takes a poetic, compassionate approach to the potentially sensational subject matter. John C. Reilly co-stars as Kevin’s more attentive father, but the film embraces all its characters with sympathy.

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN is now playing at the Angelika New York, and opens 2/3 at the Angelikas Dallas and Plano.
