A Tribute to Harold Ramis

February 24, 2014

A Tribute to Harold Ramis, from our programmer in Dallas, Adam Conway.

Beloved actor, director, writer and producer Harold Ramis died today due to complications related to auto-immune inflammatory vasculitis which he’d battled for years.

When the first movie he helped co-write was National Lampoon’s ANIMAL HOUSE, you knew Ramis was destined for greatness, especially in the field of comedy. He went on to find his true partner and collaborator in Bill Murray when he wrote the film MEATBALLS in which Murray starred. Harold Ramis made his directorial debut with CADDYSHACK which starred the likes of Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield and of course Bill Murray.

He would go on to write and co-star with Murray in 1982’s STRIPES, then their biggest collaboration and one of the greatest films of the 1980s, GHOSTBUSTERS. It was a massive success that led to a sequel, several animated TV shows, and ongoing rumblings of a 3rd film. Ramis and Murray’s last collaboration together was GROUNDHOG DAY in 1993. It was another major success for Ramis and Murray and showed that whenever they did work together something magical would happen.

After a falling out their careers diverged, with Ramis directing the comedies MULTIPLICTY and ANAYLZE THAT, among others, and Bill Murray starring in Sophia Coppola’s LOST IN TRANSLATION and going on to become a muse for Wes Anderson.

Harold Ramis will definitely be missed and his legacy will live on in the films he has done especially those that he did with Bill Murray. In March for Angelika After Hours, we are highlighting the work of Bill Murray, now it will also be in remembrance of Harold Ramis.

WE ARE WHAT WE ARE director Q&A

October 11, 2013

Texas Frightmare Weekend and the Angelika Dallas hosted a great Q&A with Director Jim Mickle of WE ARE WHAT WE ARE. Topics include casting, set locations, Kurt Russell’s son, acting methods and much more.

Proving that richly drawn characters, elegantly composed images and carefully mounted suspense still have their place in contemporary horror, WE ARE WHAT WE ARE is a slow-burn slice of American Gothic. Set in a rain-drenched corner of the Catskills in upstate New York, the story revolves around Frank Parker, a deeply religious patriarch grieving over the sudden death of his wife during preparations for the sacred family ritual of Lamb’s Day. But Frank’s teenage daughters have begun to question this tradition, and a local medico has uncovered disturbing evidence that points suspicion in the direction of the Parker house.

WE ARE WHAT WE ARE opens 10/11 at the Angelika Dallas.

Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost on THE WORLD’S END

August 23, 2013

Our man in Dallas, Adam Conway, caught up with director Edgar Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost to talk about their new film THE WORLD’S END – the final film in their Cornetto Trilogy (aka the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy). They talk about how the idea for the film came about, some movies that influenced it, as well as their favorite scene to film and some of the best movies they have seen this year.

Director Edgar Wright reunites with stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost for the final installment in the uproarious Cornetto Trilogy (also known as the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy), which began with Shaun of the Dead, an instant cult classic send up of zombie movie gore fests, and Hot Fuzz, a blood spattered spoof of American actions movies. Their latest is THE WORLD’S END, an apocalyptic comedy in which Gary (Pegg) reunites his buddies for a marathon pub crawl, until an alien invasion suddenly leaves the entire fate of mankind hanging in the balance.

THE WORLD’S END opens 8/23 at the Angelika Dallas.

AUSTENLAND – interview with director Jerusha Hess and actor J.J. Feild

August 22, 2013

Friends of Angelika Mosaic Molly Dedham and Travis Hopson sat down with Austenland director Jerusha Hess and actor J.J. Feild to talk about the filmmaking process, suffocation by doilies, and how freaking wonderful Keri Russell is. (SPOILER WARNING at the 5-minute mark.)

A wickedly funny, irreverent comedy featuring an impeccable cast of archetypal characters, AUSTENLAND is a romantic comedy about a young woman (played by Keri Russell) obsessed with all things Jane Austen. When she decides to spend her life savings on a trip to an English resort catering to Austen-crazed women, Jane’s fantasies of meeting the perfect Regency-era gentleman suddenly become more real than she ever could have imagined. One of the most highly anticipated films out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, AUSTENLAND is the feature directorial debut from screenwriter Jerusha Hess (NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE).

AUSTENLAND opens this month at the Angelika Film Center:

8/16 – New York, NY

8/23 – Mosaic/Fairfax, VA

8/30 – Plano, TX

THE WAY WAY BACK – Interview with Nat Faxon & Jim Rash

July 5, 2013

We recently sat down with multi-hyphenate filmmakers Nat Faxon and Jim Rash to discuss their new film, THE WAY WAY BACK. The Oscar winning writing duo behind THE DESCENDANTS spills about their writing process, what it was like to direct for the first time, how the film came about, and the long road to get the film made.

THE WAY, WAY BACK is the funny and poignant coming of age story of 14 year old Duncan’s summer vacation with his mother, her overbearing boyfriend, and his daughter. Having a rough time fitting in, the introverted Duncan finds an unexpected friend in the gregarious manager of the Water Wizz water park &mdash and this funny, clandestine friendship helps Duncan open up to and find his place in the world. This Sundance Film Festival favorite features a stellar cast including Steve Carrel, Toni Collette, Sam Rockwell, and Allison Janney.

THE WAY WAY BACK opens Friday 7/5 at the Angelikas in Plano, TX and Fairfax, VA
