Video interview: John Michael McDonagh on CALVARY

August 7, 2014

A darkly comedic drama from John Michael McDonagh (THE GUARD), international film sensation CALVARY follows the story of Father James, a priest driven by spiritual integrity whose world is turned upside down when his life is threatened during confessional. Brendan Gleeson (THE GUARD) brilliantly inhabits the fascinating role of a good priest tormented by a cynical, spiteful community. As he continues to minster to the towns lost souls in the week leading up to his threatened murder, he struggles to reconcile himself with God’s will.

Our programmer in Dallas, Adam Conway, had the opportunity to sit down with McDonagh and discuss his initial idea for CALVARY, his writing process, and his ongoing collaboration with Brendan Gleeson. Check it out below:

CALVARY is now playing at the Angelika Dallas, Plano, Mosaic, and New York.

[CLOSED] Angelika Plano: Enter to win a BOYHOOD soundtrack

July 18, 2014

Sign up at the Angelika Plano during opening weekend Friday 7/18 – Sunday 7/20 for a chance to win the soundtrack from BOYHOOD!

Filmed over a 12-year span with the same cast, Oscar nominee Richard Linklater’s BOYHOOD is an unprecedented coming-of-age story that follows the ups and downs of childhood like no other film before. Ellar Coltrane gives a stunning breakthrough performance as the boy, Mason, who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke (Linklater’s BEFORE MIDNIGHT), Emmy winner Patricia Arquette (Medium), and newcomer Lorelei Linklater, this early Oscar contender is already being hailed by critics as one of the finest films of the year.

Set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay’s “Yellow” to Arcade Fire’s “Deep Blue,” BOYHOOD is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. It’s impossible to watch Mason and his family without thinking about our own journey.

BOYHOOD is now playing at the Angelika Plano.
