Announcing the Angelika Pop-Up at Union Market!

November 20, 2014

Since its opening in 1989, the Angelika Film Center in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood has become a cultural institution – one of the most well-known and highest-grossing dedicated arthouses in the US. From the downtown original to state-of-the-art boutique cinemas in Fairfax, VA and North Texas, the Angelika is the definitive American arthouse. We’re bringing the Angelika to the heart of DC with an exclusive microcinema experience. The Angelika Pop-Up will serve as the interim DC hub for our signature mix of specialty film programming and unique events, through the development of a luxurious new full-scale Angelika Film Center, expected to open in late 2015 at Union Market.

ANGELIKA POP-UP OPENS AT UNION MARKET ON JUNE 13 WASHINGTON DC, May 20, 2014 – DC’s acclaimed Union Market and Reading International, Inc. (NASDAQ: RDI) have announced that the Angelika Pop-Up, a three screen micro cinema located in the growing Union Market district, will open on June 13, 2014. The Angelika Pop-Up will serve as the DC hub of Angelika’s signature mix of specialty film programming and unique events during the development of the permanent Angelika Film Center expected to open in late 2015 at Union Market. As announced in late 2013, Reading International signed a lease for an Angelika Film Center in Union Market. This new multi-screen cinema will combine the most cutting edge presentation technology with elements of luxury and comfort in stylish surroundings reflective of the creative spirit existing at the Market, an artisanal, curated year-round food market featuring over 40 local vendors. While this new state-of-the-art Angelika Film Center is scheduled to open at Union Market in late 2015, the Angelika Pop-Up will satisfy a growing demand for unique entertainment to complement the Market’s vast culinary offerings. “The vibrancy and creativity of Union Market make it a perfect home for the Angelika Pop-Up,” says Ellen Cotter, chief operating officer of the US Cinema division of Reading. “And we are honored that our state-of-the-art Angelika, in development now, will be part of the continued re-shaping and transforming of this important area of Washington, DC.” “Our vision for Union Market is to create a place that brings together the innovative and creative community of DC,” says Jodie McLean, President and Chief Investment Officer of EDENS, developer of Union Market. “The caliber of the Angelika’s programming and their overall commitment to emerging and established filmmakers from both here and abroad makes them the ideal partner for Union Market and the surrounding DC neighborhood.” For the Pop-Up, a raw warehouse space was converted into three intimate screening rooms. This will offer an immediate venue for the culturally-rich DC community to enjoy not only a range of independent, foreign and specialty films, but also specially tailored film-based events, panels and unique alternative content. By providing opportunities to connect with the films and each other, the Angelika Pop-Up at Union Market aims to support a creative community of local, national and international filmmakers, artists, and film enthusiasts. In addition to the familiar theater concessions of popcorn and soda, a menu featuring a selection of packaged snack foods and drinks of the gourmet quality Union Market guests are accustomed to will be curated by former Food Network executive Bruce Seidel (Hot Lemon Productions) and former Food Network chef Santos Loo. Among the special items that guests can enjoy before, during or after their film are: Rosemary Truffle Popcorn, Crunchy Kale Chips, Maple Bacon Chuao Chocolate Bars, Intelligentsia Coffee, and a selection of craft bottled beers and wines. While this temporary micro cinema will not offer all the luxurious amenities of the future state-of-the-art cinema, the Angelika Pop-Up will feature pristine new Barco digital projection and digital sound as it offers a sneak-peek of the provocative and intelligent programming the neighborhood deserves. The Pop-Up will operate seven days per week, with showtimes and advanced reserved seating available at www.AngelikaPopUp.com. Below is a description of some upcoming films scheduled to open at the Pop-Up: Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon – Opens June 13 – Opening Week Film In his directorial debut, Mike Myers documents the astounding career of Shep Gordon, the consummate Hollywood insider. Beginning with a chance encounter with Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix in 1968, Gordon managed the careers of Alice Cooper, Blondie, Luther Vandross and Raquel Welch. He even found time to invent the “Celebrity Chef” with his representation of Emeril Lagasse and forge a friendship with the Dalai Lama through his philanthropic endeavors with the Tibet Fund. Stuffed with fantastic archive footage, Gordon’s unlikely story is told by Alice Cooper, Michael Douglas, Sylvester Stallone, Anne Murray, Willie Nelson, Emeril Lagasse, and more. Queen Margot – 20th Anniversary Directors Cut – Opens June 13 – Opening Week Film Patrice Chereau’s acclaimed tale of intrigue and forbidden love returns to theaters in its complete, uncut version in celebration of the landmark film’s 20th Anniversary. Triumphant winner of 5 Cesar Awards and the 1994 Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize, this powerful and sexually charged film stars Isabelle Adjani, Daniel Auteuil, Virna Lisi and Vincent Pérez. Amidst the late 16th century Wars of Religion, when Catholics and Protestant Huguenots battled over control of France, scheming power player Catherine de Medici offers up her daughter Margot for marriage to the King of Navarre in a bold political move to reconcile France. Flex is Kings – Opens June 20 This inspiring documentary explores the hopes and realities of the under-acknowledged and totally unfunded group of Brooklyn artists behind the urban dance movement known as “flexing.” Born in the Brooklyn neighborhood of East New York, the competitive dance style combines dramatic contortions, simulated violence, and flowing footsteps that are at once flights of fancy as well as poetic evocations of the streets. Shot over two years by local filmmakers, the film is structured around Battlefest, the central organizing event of the Flex movement, and focuses on some of the community’s key personalities. Violette – Opens June 27 An official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival, Cesar Award winner Martin Provost’s VIOLETTE spans 20 years in the complex life of trailblazing French feminist author Violette Leduc, and her relationship with the legendary Simone de Beauvoir. Born out of wedlock in the early 20th century, Violette (Emmanuelle Devos, in a searing performance) encountered Simone de Beauvoir post-WWII in St-Germain-des-Prés. The intense relationship between the two women would last their entire lives – a relationship based on Violette’s quest for freedom through writing and Simone’s (Sandrine Kiberlain) conviction that she held the fate of an extraordinary writer in her hands. The Angelika film experience at Union Market won’t just end with the credits. Filmgoers can look forward to future Union Market dinner-and-a-movie promotions as well as other collaborative programs. The Angelika Pop-Up is located at 550 Penn Street NE (between 5th and 6th Streets NE), just one block north of Union Market, and next door to Gallaudet University and the new Dolcezza Gelato Factory. Free parking is available in the parking lot directly in front of Union Market. Additionally, the NOMA Gallaudet University Metro Station (Red Line) is a short walk up 6th Street to the Angelika Pop-Up. For more information about Union Market, please visit www.UnionMarketDC.com. Angelika After Hours: October

October 1, 2014

Brave the night and join us at After Hours for some of our favorite tales of terror, featuring zombies, vampires, poltergeists, and more to get you in the Halloween spirit:

THE LOST BOYS (1987) – 10/3 & 10/4
Joel Schumacher’s teen vampire thriller blends horror, humor, and plenty of visual style with standout performances from a cast full of young 1980s stars. Sam and his older brother Michael are average, everyday teens. But after they move with their mother to peaceful Santa Clara, California, things mysteriously begin to change. THE LOST BOYS reshapes vampire tradition, deftly mixing heart-pounding terror, rib tickling laughs and a body–gyrating rock soundtrack. The marvelous cast includes Jason Patric, Jami Gertz, Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Feldman, Corey Haim, Barnard Hughes, Edward Herrmann and Dianne Wiest.

THE SHINING (1980) – 10/10 & 10/11
THE SHINING is Stanley Kubrick’s psychological horror masterpiece, a stylized classic which continues to influence the entire genre. Inspired by Stephen King’s bestselling novel, the film stars Jack Nicholson in one of his most iconic roles – Jack Torrance, an aspiring writer and winter caretaker of the Overlook Hotel. Kubrick’s signature visuals turn the cavernous, empty hotel into one of the most terrifying settings of all time, while classic horror moments from REDRUM to “Heeeeere’s Johnny” to the creepy twins continue to draw rabid fans to this enduring horror favorite.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984) – 10/17 & 10/18
Wes Craven’s intelligent horror classic, complete with the terrifying visual appearance of Freddy Krueger, still causes nightmares to this day. In A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, a group of teenagers are terrorized by an evil being from another world who gets to his victims by entering their dreams and killing them with gloves that have knife blades attached to each finger.

POLTERGEIST (1982) – 10/24 & 10/25
A modern horror classic from producer Steven Spielberg, POLTERGEIST presents the dark side of middle class suburbia. The film centers on a typical family living in the peaceful Cuesta Verde Estates. Soon strange things begin to happen around the house, and five year old Carol Ann is repeatedly drawn to the television before being sucked into a closet, prompting the family to consult with a para-psychologist and an exorcist about the phenomena in their home. They make a horrifying discovery: Carol Ann is alive and in the house, but is being held on another spectral plane.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968) – 10/31 & 11/1
George A. Romero’s 1968 cult classic NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD set the template for zombie films for years to come, with tight editing, realistic gore, and a sly political undercurrent. Following a bizarre event which causes a small town to be overrun by a horde of zombies, the remaining survivors of the local theatre troupe barricade themselves in the building, fighting for their lives. The ensemble cast features a variety of quirky characters, who together must fend off zombie attacks as well as confront their own personal issues if they are going to have any chance of survival.

Cult favorites return to the big screen Friday and Saturday nights, exclusively at the Angelika Dallas and Angelika at Mosaic. Tickets are just $7, on sale now at angelikafilmcenter.com.

Angelika After Hours: John Hughes High School

September 15, 2014

Flashback to the 80s and go back to school with the unforgettable teen comedies of John Hughes:

WEIRD SCIENCE (1985) – 9/5 & 9/6
Two teens transform their virginal frustrations into a computerized reality in one of the most insanely goofy comedies of the ’80s. Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith play a pair of high-school geeks who are hapless with members of the opposite sex. Using Wyatt’s computer, they create what they believe is the ideal woman. A lightning storm brings that woman to life. Lisa (played by Kelly LeBrock) sets about building their self-confidence, but trouble begins brewing when Wyatt’s older brother (Bill Paxton) begins to realize that something is not as it should be.

THE BREAKFAST CLUB (1985) – 9/12 & 9/13
John Hughes wrote and directed this quintessential 1980s high school drama featuring the hottest young stars of the decade. Trapped in Saturday detention in a prison-like school library are Claire, the princess (Molly Ringwald); Andrew, the jock (Emilio Estevez); John, the criminal (Judd Nelson); Brian, the brain (Anthony Michael Hall); and Allison, the basket case (Ally Sheedy). These five strangers begin the day with nothing in common, each bound to his/her place in the high school caste system. Yet the students bond together when faced with the villainous principal (Paul Gleason), and they realize that they have more in common than they may think.

SIXTEEN CANDLES (1984) – 9/19 & 9/20
It’s Samantha Baker’s Sweet Sixteen and no one in her family remembers the important occasion. John Hughes shows how coming of age can be full of surprises in this warm hearted teenage comedy starring Molly Ringwald. She’s your average teen, enduring creepy freshmen, spoiled siblings, confused parents and the Big Blonde on Campus who stands between her and the boy of her dreams. This sparkling film features a dynamic score, and outstanding performances by Paul Dooley, Emmy winner Blanche Baker, and Oscar nominee Justin Henry.

FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF (1986) – 9/26 & 9/27
Teenaged Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) is a legend in his own time thanks to his uncanny skill at cutting classes and getting away with it. Intending to make one last grand duck-out before graduation, Ferris calls in sick, “borrows”; a Ferrari, and embarks on a one-day bacchanal through the streets of Chicago. Dogging Ferris’ trail at every turn is high-school principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), determined to catch Bueller in the act of class-cutting. Iconic 80s writer/director John Hughes weds satire, slapstick, and social commentary in this high school classic.

THE BIG LEBOWSKI (1998) – 8/29 & 8/30
This Coen Brothers cult classic follows the Dude – an unemployed slacker with a penchant for bowling, played by Jeff Bridges. After a case of mistaken identity he goes on a quest to get a new rug and gets pulled into a ransom scheme involving the Big Lebowski’s kidnapped trophy wife. The all-star cast includes John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, Phillip Seymor Hoffman and John Turturro.

Cult favorites return to the big screen every Friday and Saturday night, exclusively at the Angelika Dallas and Angelika at Mosaic. Tickets are just $7, on sale now at angelikafilmcenter.com.

Video interview: John Michael McDonagh on CALVARY

August 7, 2014

A darkly comedic drama from John Michael McDonagh (THE GUARD), international film sensation CALVARY follows the story of Father James, a priest driven by spiritual integrity whose world is turned upside down when his life is threatened during confessional. Brendan Gleeson (THE GUARD) brilliantly inhabits the fascinating role of a good priest tormented by a cynical, spiteful community. As he continues to minster to the towns lost souls in the week leading up to his threatened murder, he struggles to reconcile himself with God’s will.

Our programmer in Dallas, Adam Conway, had the opportunity to sit down with McDonagh and discuss his initial idea for CALVARY, his writing process, and his ongoing collaboration with Brendan Gleeson. Check it out below:

CALVARY is now playing at the Angelika Dallas, Plano, Mosaic, and New York.
